UK Parents Worried About Video Games

Almost three quarters of UK parents are concerned about the content of video games while almost 80% think that games can have a detrimental effect on some children. The YouGov survey was carried out on behalf of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the organisation responsible certifying films and some video games. Out of 2,143 adults, 77% said that games ratings should reflect the concerns of parents and that they should be based on the ratings used by the BBFC in classifying films. "This poll clearly shows parents support a regulatory system for games that is independent of the industry and UK based, reflecting UK sensibilities and sensitivities," said David Cooke, director of the BBFC said. "The BBFC has been classifying games for over 20 years and our decisions reflect the views of the public. Our classification systems and symbols are known and trusted by the public and in a converging media world they want to know what their children are playing as well as watching." This is obviously going to kick off another war of words with the voluntary games rating body, PEGI (Pan European Games Information), which believes that films and games should not be rated in the same way. And certainly not by a government-run body. Right now, the PEGI system has a ratings system of (3+, 7+, 12+, 16+ and 18+), along with symbols that represent certain in-game activities like sex, violence, drug use etc. The recent report by TV psychologist Tanya Byron, the 'Byron Review' for the government on protecting children in the digital age has already suggested that games rated '12' and above should be handled by the BBFC. A House Of Commons report also suggests putting the BBFC in charge. Are games ratings confusing for you and would using the same ratings system as that used on movies make it easier when judging games for kids?-Martin Lynch games movies consoles
