Authors: With video games usually blamed for making us lazy, fat and homicidal, it's refreshing to hear that one of Britain's Olympian medal hopefuls is using them to actually improve his skills. Street Fighter IV is now part of the training regime for Taekwondo's rising star, Tyrone Robinson, albeit one of the less energetic and painful bits. Already a British International Championship Gold Medallist and a European Championship Bronze Medallist in Taekwondo, Robinson is part of Team GB for the London 2012 Olympics. The entertaining beat 'em up is already a big hit with gamers but this is the first time it's been cited as an effective training tool for speeding up reflexes and sharpening coordination. 22-year old Robinson jokes: "I'm never going to be able to throw fireballs in the ring like the characters in Street Fighter IV, but I can still try some of the crazy kicks they do. It's a good way to relax at the end of a hard day's training and great to have a tournament with friends." The coaches, surprisingly, are right behind him. Des Blackburn, the Performance Analyst for Great Britain Taekwondo, explains: "To complement their physical training our athletes are also encouraged, in their spare time, to play this type of game, as it is known that doing so can increase their attention span, depth perception and hand-eye coordination; though this is always recommended as an addition to their physical training and never as a replacement!" All we gamers need now is a way to get fit without the painful exercise bit.-Martin Lynch [Gamezine] games sport Olympics
