Blur Multi-Player Beta Goes Public, No Keys Required

Almost exactly a month ago, I reported on the launch of the Multi-Player racing game called Blur. Blur is a new action packed racing game created by Activision and Bizarre Creations. Being referred to as a cross between Need for Speed and Mario Kart, Blur is shaping up to be 2010’s best racing game.

At first, the multi-player beta was only available to the ones who signed up for it, and received invitation keys. Due to the volume of users who signed up for the beta, Bizarre Creations ran out of those invite keys soon. In light of that fact, the good folks at Bizarre decided to make Blur a free-for-all multi-player beta experience next week.

Kotaku recently had a podcast that featured Gareth Wilson, Bizarre Creation’s Lead Designer. Wilson stated that they simply ran out of product keys faster than they anticipated. The plan is to turn this closed beta into a free beta download on XBOX Live marketplace by April 6th.

BLUR_logo_RENDERED_color"We basically ran out of code, so next week we are going to go live with the whole thing publically so anyone can download it," Wilson said. "We've been sneaking on to see what people think of it and people are really getting into it..."

While Blur will be available for the PS3 at launch, Bizarre has decided against a multi-player beta for the PS3 for many reason—most of which stated in the podcast.

"Why didn't it come to the PS3? Really because when we were doing the beta it's hard enough to try and get a beta out that doesn't crash every five minutes while trying to finish a full game," Wilson said. "Trying to do that on multiple platforms at once, so trying to do a PS3, Xbox and PC beta release at the same time, it just isn't possible. It was enough of a distraction doing it for one platform," he said. "For our selfish needs, we only needed it on one platform because all we wanted to do was gather data about how people are using the cars, the power ups, the tracks, and to be honest we can get that data from one platform.

"We just chose Xbox really because it's the platform that, to be straight, has more online users than the PS3."

Even if your not a big fan of racing games, I would recommend you getting on this beta. This game is incredibly thrilling, keeping you at the edge of your seat till you reach the finish line. Be Ready to download on the big day, I’ll be sure to remind you.
