Nearly a year ago to the day, Microsoft said that they would be bringing Windows Phone 7 to china in the second half of 2011. Well we are very near the end of 2011 now and there’s still no sign of them. Microsoft has announced that they will not be able to make the December 31st deadline they set and they now expect to launch Windows Phone 7 in the first half of 2012 now.

The U.S. software giant is working to “ensure local citizens have a great experience with Windows Phones”, and is working closely with its partners in China to determine through what channels and when Windows Phones will be available regionally.

It is thought that handset makers like Nokia,ZTE and Huawei could be the ones to bring out the first Windows Phone 7 devices in China. More than likely the reason for the delay is that the devices need to be localized for the market, and knowing China’s strict censorship and moderation rules, there will probably be plenty of adjustments that need to be made and tested before the devices can be brought to the market.

Microsoft are probably trying to negotiate more deals with partners in China as well. I’m sure that they are taking what they’ve learnt from launching Windows Phone 7 in other markets and applying it to the Chinese launch.

Android is currently the most popular operating system in China with 58% of the total market share so it’s critical that Microsoft try and get in there as soon as they can before Android runs away with the show.
