Microsoft SkyDrive has problems.

What is SkyDrive?

This is Microsoft’s version of file storage and share capabilities on the cloud. There you can store, organize, and download your files, photos, and favorites onWindows Live servers, and access them from any computer with an Internet connection. But problems are starting to make the system less that accomodating.

Problems

For example, according to Omar Shahine, a group program manager for SkyDrive: One Twitter user asked why “synced storage” and “My Files” are separated instead of being used together. Another asked how to move files or folders on SkyDrive. One person questioned why the size of a video is limited to 100 megabytes when a full 25GB of storage is available. And another requested the ability to share individual files without sharing entire folders. As a result, it is estimated that only 10% of college students are using Skydrive. This is one market that Microsoft would hope had better connection and attendance.

Fixes?

With the problems that SkyDrive is encountering, can it be made to work; quickly? Here are some suggestions that Microsoft is apparently working on.

  • The service would work across any device and any operating system.
  • The service would simply and securely sync files to the cloud and other devices and replace e-mailed attachments as a means of sharing files.
  • A certain amount of storage would be free, but users could easily pay for more.
  • It would cloud-enable your entire PC to store and sync your local content online.
  • The service would also work with e-mail, photo software, and other applications to let you organize and share your content.

Wiindows 8

SkyDrive is also making inroads into Windows 8 and Windows Phone. In fact, access to SkyDrive will be directly integrated into the new operating system Windows 8. All it will require is for you to sign up for a Windows Live account. Unless you already have one. After that you’ll be able to upload and download your files directly between SkyDrive and Windows. Access to SkyDrive should be even faster and smoother through the new Metro user interface, giving you instant access to your content, according to Microsoft.
