Concept art is also referred to as visual development and/or concept design. This term can also be applied to retail design, set design, fashion design and architectural design.

Recently, concept art has taken on modern software technology like Photoshop and Corel Painter to emphasize the concept and appearance of the art. Graphics tablets are also used, which enables more efficient working methods. Before this a number of traditional mediums were used like oil paints, acrylic paints, markers, and pencils. As a result many modern paint packages are programmed to simulate the blending of color in the same way paint would blend on a canvas. But the proficiency with traditional media can often determine a concept artist’s ability to use painting software. One blends into the other.

Concept Art Genre

What art concepts does this genre focus on? The two most widely covered themes in concept art are science fiction and fantasy. In large part because there are many subjects available in those areas, artists can have a free form in creating any image based on a theme of their design.

Concept art has always had to cover many subjects, but originally it was the primary medium for film poster design since the early days of Hollywood, however, since the recent rise of concept art used in video game production it has expanded to cover genres from football to the Mafia and beyond.
