While Windows 7 tablet’s are still few and far between, Wei Xinlong decided he’d forget about waiting for the likes of Toshiba,Dell or Sony to come out with a Windows 7 tablet and build his own. And he managed to do it a lot cheaper than any of them would. At just $125, this has to be the cheapest tablet to date!

Ok, there’s actually more to this story than that. Wei Xinlong wanted to get his girlfriend a tablet as a present, but being a cash strapped student he couldn’t afford to buy her one of the shelf. So instead he decided to go make one himself. All he needed was $125 and a bit of creativity to get it done.

After looking at several how-to videos and reading up about how to build your own tablet, he got to work. First off he bought a cheap used laptop for a mere $78. Out of this he took the processor, motherboard, memory, GPU and display from it. Then he went about making a new case for the device by hand,carving out the holes that were needed to fit it together.

He bought the touchscreen and battery separately for under $50 which brought the total cost of this build to a mere $125.

After putting all this together, he ended up with a Windows 7 touchscreen tablet which is apparently similar in size to an iPad, but is a fair bit thicker. Wei even included an Apple logo on the device.

Luckily for Wei, his girlfriend – Sun Shasha was delighted with it and said that it was “the best gift I’ve ever had, and I will keep it forever”. She was the one who added the ring of rhinestones on its cover
