Microsoft’s new mobile smartphone platform is still young, but is getting noticed by developers and tech journalists alike. That’s why it’s not necessarily surprising to see the fledgling OS voted by a panel of judges at Know Your Mobile to be the “Best Operating System of the Year.”

The interface for Windows Phone is noticed mainly because it distinguishes itself from the static grid of icon paradigm adopted and copied by other platforms. The UI instead is a column of varying “live tiles” which bubble information about the given apps and services to the home screen, leaving the user less reason to go in and out of apps so often. Microsoft’s mobile OS is truly taking a different approach and when people put their prejudice aside to give it a try, they usually come away surprised, in my own limited experience, even if they still prefer a competing platform.

‘It has the most potential, with a unique interface and a rapidly growing apps selection. It has a great looking UI and doesn’t look like Android or iOS.’

‘A massive move from the previous OS. Huge growth in apps and the system looks heaps better than the competition.’

‘Innovative interface, with more success to come.’

‘A refreshing OS that doesn’t try and copy other operating systems. Has attracted a large number of developers too.’
