Nokia Reiterates that They Are Off to an Excellent Start with Windows Phone

A few early speculators have predicted a less-than-stellar Nokia Windows Phone launch with little factual information and absolutely no sales data to back up those claims. This is surprising because Nokia has been claiming all along that their launch and interest in their Lumia lines have been very good. A few large carriers and retailers have noted that their sales and preorders were greater than expected, with some even running out of stock.

Nokia’s stock has taken a beating in the past week over pre-mature speculation about the lack of Lumia Windows Phone sales. To quell some of the rumors of a poor launch, Nokia has released a statement via Reuters regarding their UK launch for Windows Phone:

“Lumia 800 sales in the U.K. are off to an excellent start. “Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history.” Nokia further added, “By our measures, we have gained significant smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the U.K.,”

Nokia has yet to provide sales numbers on the devices sold, but this should not be completely disconcerting because Nokia tends not to release sales data outside of their quarterly reports. Nokia is considered to be Microsoft’s best shot at gaining some quick, much-needed market share for their new smartphone platform. At the same time, Nokia is also hoping a partnership with an up-and-coming mobile OS will help it to remain relevant in a quickly-changing mobile market.

Until we see some gain in Windows Phone market share or some sales numbers from Nokia, I guess we’ll have to take their word for it.
