Microsoft Office 2010 ships in many different editions. There are two core groups, Home and Business, each with a distinct set of editions available. Each edition offers access to a set of Office programs, with the more expensive editions usually offering additional programs that go beyond the Excel, Word and PowerPoint set of tools.

And then there is Microsoft Office Starter 2010. Starter is the only Office version that is available for free. It is a limited edition that only contains versions of Microsoft Word and Excel. Considering that those two programs are the most used in Microsoft’s Office suite, it is fair to say that this could be quite sufficient for the majority of users.

The main limitations are that Office Starter is ad driven, and that both Word and Excel do not offer their complete feature set to the user. Most users on the other hand may not even notice that functionality is missing.

Microsoft Office Starter 2010 was up until now only supplied to OEM manufacturers who added it to some of their computer systems. The Office suite came preinstalled with those purchased computer systems. There was no option to download and install Office Starter as a end user. Until now, that is.

The server stores other language versions as well, just replace the language identifier in the web address, e.g. en-us with another country language identifier like it-it to download the Italian version of Office Starter 2010.

You are not asked for a product key during or after installation. There are certainly alternatives, Libre Office for instance for desktops or Google Docs for users who prefer cloud based applications.
