Facebook seems to be slowly but surely taking over all our lives. With over 750 million people using Facebook these days, it’s rapidly becoming part of everyone’s daily lives. We share pictures, write posts and chat through it all the time, and even when we leave our computers, we can’t get away from it.

All our smartphones have access to it with the countless number of Facebook apps available. Recently Facebook even brought out a messaging app just so you can chat. Now it looks like Facebook are looking to replicate this experience on Windows 7 as well.

Facebook Testing Messenger for Windows

They’ve started testing a Facebook Messenger for Windows 7 with a limited group of users. While it’s still in beta and only being trialled with a limited number of users, this messenger app brings notifications, the ticker feed and of course the ability to chat right from your desktop. You’ll no longer need to go to facebook.com to gain access to it. I’m also fairly certain that we’ll see video chat added in there soon enough as well.

Messenger for Windows is a new, trial application that lets you use Facebook without being on www.facebook.com. While you surf the web or use other applications on your computer, you can:

  • Chat and message with your friends on Facebook
  • See the latest updates from your friends in ticker
  • Get quick notifications about what’s going on

We’re testing out a first version of the app with a small group of people. During this trial period, we plan on rolling out changes to the app and expect outages and periods of instability as we make improvements. Note: Messenger for Windows will automatically install updates.

This could be an interesting program from Facebook. They’ve developed the program entirely themselves and it has nothing to do with Microsoft. They are looking to see if users will be willing to leave a Facebook app open and running on their desktop the whole day. Most Facebook addicts already do this anyway in their browser.

Facebook already seems to be confident enough with it that they are going to release it to everyone at some stage in the near future anyway.

“If you’re not in the test group, you’ll be able to get the app once we roll it out to everyone.”

What do you think of having a Facebook app for Windows? Would you use it?
