Microsoft has confirmed that the Fall 2012 update for the Xbox 360 gaming console will be coming to all users on December 6th. The update is currently in its beta preview program and while I cannot discuss my experiences with the update preview, I can speak about what Microsoft has already made public.

The new update drastically changes the Xbox 360 dashboard interface, opting to go with a metro look and feel. The move to a Metro-style UI will bring the platform closer together with their smartphone platform, Windows Phone, as well as the upcoming version Windows 8.

As can be seen from the officially released screenshots from Microsoft, the dashboard brings with it a completely horizontal navigation scheme and can be controlled by using either voice, hand gestures via Kinect or the controller.

Microsoft has also announced multiple deals with partners to bring Live TV and TV apps to the console. A few of these partners include: HBO, BBC, Bravo and Syfy. The update will also include a number of internet video alternatives including: YouTube, DailyMotion and LoveFilm.

Other improvements include cloud storage for saved games and roaming profiles and a new feature called “Beacons” which allows the user to set up gaming appointments with their Xbox LIVE friends. Bing search will also be integrated into the new dashboard.

As always, the update for the console will be free to Xbox 360 owners, however, many of the new services will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription and some services may require a particular TV provider.
