How To Get Windows 8 Explorer Ribbon On Windows 7

One of the new features that’s been introduced in the Windows 8 Developer Preview is a new ribbon interface in Windows Explorer which is quite similar to the ribbon interface that you find in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint etc.. Some people don’t really like it all, while others prefer it to the traditional interface. There is a bit of a learning curve associated with using it, but I find that once I get used to it, it’s quite helpful.

So if you want to get this new explorer ribbon on Windows 7, there’s a handy little program which will help you get it.

There’s a program called “Better Explorer” which will do the job. However it’s still in Alpha stage, so don’t expect it to work perfectly. There’s been reports that sometimes the icons won’t be sized properly and the odd button doesn’t work yet either. What’s more, it doesn’t actually replace the existing Windows 7 explorer. When you go to use your explorer, you have to use the “Better Explorer” one so as to get the ribbon bar.

How To Get Windows 8 Explorer Ribbon On Windows 7 It’s also worth noting that this doesn’t work on Windows Vista or Windows XP. To implement it, simply download the latest release from here. It’s constantly being updated and improved all the time so it’s worth checking back for updates every so often.

Once you’ve installed it, you’ll probably want to pin it to your taskbar so that you have quick access to it. The taskbar icon for it is the same as the current Windows Explorer one so it’ll be easy to recognise.

Then every time that you want to use the new ribbon interface with your explorer, you just use the “Better Explorer” shortcut instead of the normal one.

Of course, since this is only in the Alpha stage of development and there’s still a lot of work to do, it doesn’t become the default explorer on Windows. There’s also a couple of known little bugs and issues with it every so often which you can read up about on the site.
