How important is the Azure Cloud for business? For Underwriters Laboratory, the answer is very. They have begun deploying Microsoft Office 365, powered by Microsoft Exchange Online, Microsoft SharePoint Online and Microsoft Lync Online, to its 50 offices worldwide, Microsoft Corp. announced today. UL, a global independent safety science company, provides solutions for safer products, processes and work environments for more than 66,000 customers.

What is Underwriters Laboratories (UL)?

It is an independent product safety certification organization. It was established in the late 1890’s with company headquarters in Northbrook, Illinois. The goal of personal safety in products is its model. To accomplish product safety it develops standards and test procedures for products, materials, components, assemblies, tools and equipment. It also evaluates and certifies the efficiency of a company’s business processes through its management system registration programs. Finally, UL analyzes drinking and other clean water samples using its drinking water laboratory in South Bend, Indiana, where it also evaluates products for environmental sustainability through UL Environment, another subsidiary.

The Cloud System

UL didn’t start with Cloud operations, they started with Microsoft Office, but quickly discovered that their employees, from engineers, to other staff, were comfortable with the applications. Next they decided that that with a growing  company staff, it needed to have a coordinated software application that all could use, especially their international staff. Plus with the acquisition of 12 companies in the last 3 years this became a serious issue. There are also 50 offices worldwide.

So the solution that developed, became almost a no-brainer; they adopted Office 365 cloud service that specializes on Windows Office applications. With it, several things happened. They were able to get on-board thousands of employees in a matter of weeks. The impact on how people worked became even more important, because now they were able to communicate and collaborate together, whether it was across continents or just down the hallways from each other.  Also, this collaboration was now available 24/7. This means that work can be completed faster, and the results made official.

In all, Office 365 cloud services are the perfect tools for a company that has multiple offices around the world. It keeps everyone in tune with the company’s expectations. Plus the cost to the company is reduced because upgrades are made at the Cloud, not at the company site.
